Our second annual evening of fresh interpretations of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Incorporating Guggenheim award-winning composers as well as up and coming theater professionals, the evening exemplifies West Park’s commitment to open artistic exchange. The artists will use spoken-word, music, dance, video and comedy to present Shakespeare’s sonnets in a whole new light.

Make Music New York is a live, free musical celebration on June 21, the longest day of the year, with over 1,200 concerts on streets, sidewalks, and parks across the five boroughs.

The Bread & Puppet Theater returns to West Park with The Public Access Center for the Obvious Presents: The Situation, a new work written and directed by founder Peter Schumann. This musical and dark clown-show features cardboard horses, an anti-extinction angel, proletariat broom dancers, a 100 watt light bulb, a ship of fools, and a swinging brass band: all of whom are urging the Not-Yet-Existing-Upriser-Masses into reality. Straight from New Orleans, “the singing, dancing and imaginative qualities of the show is appropriate for children…the audience is inspired by its social message.Tickets are $0-$25, sliding scale. The Open Choir is a free, public event, where everyone is welcome to participate. A core of artists leads participants and guests, both new and returning, through a flow of songs, looking for the possibility of a simple and alive kind of experience and interaction. Everyone is invited to join through dance and song, or find his or her own way to support what happens. During these non-sectarian encounters through songs of the African diaspora, participants of different backgrounds become co-authors of the meeting, creating an artwork that respects and embraces cultural variety. Created by the world-renowned theatre group the Open Program of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards and developed with the West Park-resident NYC Seed Group, the Open Choir appears periodically at West-Park for just a few evenings every few months.
